The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Friday approved a loan package of $19 million for Mongolia to buy vaccines against COVID-19.
The Manila-based bank said the project was part of ADB’s Asia Pacific Vaccine Access Facility (APVAX) launched in December 2020 to offer rapid and equitable vaccine-related support to its developing members.
ADB President, Masatsugu Asakawa said the project under APVAX would provide the government of Mongolia with immediate and flexible financing to vaccinate priority populations.
Asakawa said that priority would be given, especially, to those at highest risk from infection to reduce the impacts of the disease and help put the country on a path to sustained recovery.
“These include individuals at high risk of death from COVID-19 infection and about 200,000 frontline workers.
“ In addition, people with disabilities, those who suffer from chronic diseases and vulnerable groups requiring social assistance will benefit from the vaccine rollout,’’ the ADB added.
Mongolia has reported 55,852 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Friday, including 277 deaths. (Xinhua/NAN)
