Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala may eventually emerge the Director- General of World Trade Organisation (WTO) as she has become the only candidate left in the race to land the global top job.
Multiple media sources suggest that her only challenger and South Korean Foreign Minister, Yoo Myung-hee has pulled out of the race on Friday morning as it was revealed that there was a talk with the United States that agreed that there was a need to “comprehensively” revitalise the world trade body.
Prompt News reports her withdrawal now leaves Okonjo-Iweala, a former Nigerian government’s Coordinating Minister of Economic Development as the only candidate left for the job.
Recall that her emergence was blocked last year when former United States President, Donald Trump’s administration expressed its opposition to her candidacy.
But the new US President Joe Biden has now been reported to be satisfied with the leadership qualities of Okonjo-Iweala, who also carries an American passport as she has dual citizenship of Nigeria and US.
