Retired Air Vice Marshal Muhammadu Muhammed, Director-General, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says his priority is to provide staff members with adequate manpower development, improved health care services and affordable housing scheme.
Muhammed said this at an interactive session with the staff members in the headquarters of the agency on Wednesday in Abuja.
He added that as emergency responders, it was important to prioritise the general wellbeing of its workers for them to be efficient when discharging their duties.
He added that the agency was also working on providing affordable housing scheme for its workers across the country.
“I am proud to say that we are working on improving the health services through partnership with efficient health service providers.
“We are working on providing affordable housing scheme for staff members across the country.
“We are also appealing to all state governors and the FCT to allocate lands that we could develop in partnership with developers,” he said.
He added that adequate trainings, career progression, regular meetings with workers would also be given precedence.
On his achievements since he assumed office on April 30, he said that the agency was able to establish the desired working relationship with its mother ministry and the National Assembly.
He added that the agency had also reactivated many operational equipment as it was also making efforts at purchacing more operational vehicles.
Muhammed added that all of the programmes were aimed at developing strategies to improving emergency response and effective service delivery.
The director-general, however, mentioned that awareness campaign that targeted 100 per cent of Nigerians on reducing their risk to flooding and other disasters was one of its targets.
He gave other targets as:
“Responding to all catastrophic disasters in the country and shortening the response time to emergencies.
“Supporting the provision of basic needs for IDPs in catastrophic disasters.
“Supporting the coordination of safe and dignified return of IDPs in the country in collaboration with other stakeholders among others.
“Strengthening institutions for disaster management at the states and local government level among others.”(NAN)
