Twenty-six boxers are expected to fight for honours in various boxing bouts at the Balmoral Event Hall, Victoria’s Island, Lagos on May 21, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Henry Lewis, promoter of the fights, told NAN on Friday in Lagos that the bouts would be “really entertaining”.
Lewis, Nigeria’s ex-boxing international, spoke with NAN shortly after the boxers concluded their weigh-ins.
“I am proud to bankroll the event. My target is to bring quality development into mainstream boxing in Nigeria through providing platforms that will help the boxers to excel,” he said.
He said the edition was the third one with previous ones organised in Ibadan, Oyo State and Surulere in Lagos.
“I’m glad to be back to organise another boxing edition; it is for the growth of the sport, especially keeping the boxers busy.
”Boxing has come to stay in Nigeria and as an ex-boxer, I have to contribute my own quota to keep the spirit high and keep boxers busy and away from criminal acts.
“We have set up the boxing matchup because we want to promote big time boxing in Nigeria and we are confident that the future is very bright,” Lewis said.
NAN reports that the main fight of the night will be between Nigeria’s hard punching Featherweight Champion, Taiwo ‘Eshepo’ Agbaje, who takes on Ghana’s Emmanuel Quartey.
The fight is a title bout for the West African Union (WABU) Championship belt.
Another bout will see two female pugilists go pound for pound, while Olarenwaju Durodola, Police heavyweight boxer, will also feature in one of the bouts. (NAN)
