No fewer than 120 golfers are expected to converge on Abuja to tee off an invitational golf tournament being hosted by two newly-created subsidiaries in the petroleum industry.
The amateur event tees of at lush green of the 18-hole IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja, on Nov. 20, 2021, the organisers said on Monday.
They said sponsors, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) had concluded arrangements to host the first Golf Invitational Tournament.
Mr Paul Osu, Head, Public Affairs, NUPRC stated in a statement that the tournament was being planned to promote wellbeing of retired and serving staff members.
The golf event tagged the ‘Petroleum Regulators’ tournament would be a one-day event with players grouped into ladies, men and veterans categories, Osu said, adding that the format would be shot gun.
This implies that all the players will tee off simultaneously from different points in the course and finish almost at the same time.
Mr Gbenga Komolafe, Commission Chief Executive (CCE) , NUPRC said that the objective of the golf tournament was to create an atmosphere of relaxation and bonding.
According to the CCE, it will promote the wellbeing of players comprising of retired and serving staff from NUPRC and NMDPRA and esteemed guests from public and private sectors of the Nigerian economy.
The CCE, NUPRC and the Authority Chief Executive, NMDPR, Mr Farouk Ahmed, according to the statement, will perform the ceremonial tee off and the tournament with about 120 players jostling for the various prizes on offer.
The NUPRC and NMDPRA were recently created with the signing of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The statement added that the tournament would be an annual event. (NAN)
