At least 10 people have been confirmed dead following separate attacks allegedly carried out by suspected armed herdsmen on communities in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The latest incidents reportedly began on Saturday when gunmen invaded Akpachi village in the Ugboju community, killing two residents and leaving several others with injuries of varying severity.
Less than 24 hours later, the attackers were said to have struck again, storming the Otukpo Nobi community in the early hours of Sunday. Eight more people were reportedly killed during the attack, while a number of residents sustained injuries.
The renewed violence sparked protests across the area as angry youths and community members marched to the Och’Idoma Palace in Otukpo to register their displeasure over the persistent insecurity.
The protesters called on the government and security agencies to take urgent steps to protect lives and property in the affected communities.
The attacks come barely a month after the Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Ardo Risku Mohammed, and his associate, Yakubu Isah, were killed near Okwudu in Otukpo Local Government Area shortly after attending a peace meeting in Ohimini Local Government Area.
