The Yobe Government has initiated fresh research project to unravel the root causes of kidney disease and related ailments prevalent in Bade Emirate.
Dr Mohammed Gana, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Emir of Bade,
Alhaji Umar Suleiman, on Monday.
Gana said “we are here over an issue that has been bedevilling our state, Bade Emirate and this zone in general.
“The issue is none other than the high prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). This particular problem has been with us for a very long time.”
He added that several efforts to investigate the root cause and magnitude of the problem had yielded no results until Gov. Mai Mala Buni led
a team to the United Kingdom to meet a renowned research institute, introduced to the state by Prof. Mahmud Maina.
He explained that “we visited the institute to strengthen the state’s research capacity, particularly on issues bedevilling the state, including CKD,
malaria, tuberculosis and others.
“Secondly, the visit was to see how we can improve the quality of diagnostics.”
He sought the guidance and cooperation of the emir and other residents of the emirate.
Prof. Mahmud Maina, the Director, Biomedical Research Training Centre (BioRTC), who was on the commissioner’s entourage,
said that the centre, established three years ago, was building local capacity to address the state’s problems scientifically.
Maina introduced an international research team from Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Berlin, Senegal and Ghana, who were in the state to support the process.
Prof. Maimuna Waziri, the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Gashua, expressed happiness over the team’s visit and assured the university’s readiness
to collaborate in addressing the menace.
She said that “in this town, there is hardly a family that does not have a member that is not suffering from CKD.”
The Emir of Bade, Alhaji Umar Abubakar Suleiman, expressed gratitude to the state governor and the research team for their concern and support.
He assured them of the emirate’s commitment and support. (NAN)
