At last, the embattled Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Alhassan Yakmut has been booted out of his plum job.
But rather than being sacked, he was demoted and posted to the Ministry of Niger Delta as a Director.
Prompt News gathered that Yakmut, who is a civil servant, has been lobbying for soft landing in the event that the NSC would be scrapped.
The erstwhile DG was away in Brazil to inspect the facilities ahead of the Rio Olympic Games holding later in the year when his posting was released by the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation.
Sequel to the merger of the NSC with Youth to form the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, a ministerial committee set up favoured the scrapping of the Sports Commission.
Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung Wednesday, confirmed the scrapping while receiving the Acting Director-General, Dr. Vincent Akpotaire, who paid him a courtesy call in Abuja.
According to him, “the establishment of the Commission and the office of the Director-General was by the pronouncements of the President.
“As such, by its merger with the Ministry of Youth, the Commission and the office of the Director-General were equally annulled by the pronouncements of the President.”
Prompt News recalls that Yakmut was appointed Acting NSC DG in April, 2015 by then President Goodluck Jonathan, who also confirmed him two weeks to the end of his tenure.
There is subdued excitement when our correspondent visited the Sports Commission at the Federal Secretariat as most officers in the junior and senior cadres, accused Yakmut of self-centeredness in the day-to-day running of the commission.
