The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), has strongly condemned the unprovoked attacks on African foreign nationals in South Africa, challenging the government to intervene and save lives.
The National President of NCWS, Mrs Gloria Shoda, said this in a statement on Thursday, in Abuja.
Shoda, however, welcomed all the steps taken by the Nigerian government, including sending a special envoy to South Africa to meet with the government there.
The council also commended the Federal Government for withdrawing the High Commissioner to South Africa; as well as Nigeria’s withdrawal from the World Economic Summit, scheduled to hold in that country.
“We are calling on the Nigerian government to do more. They (South Africa) cannot take us for granted after helping them out of the apartheid era.
“We want the Nigerian government to take the xenophobic attacks on its citizens seriously. We cannot fold our hands and watch our people being killed.
“The government should ensure that these attacks are investigated by the South African government.
