The Kwara Fire Service saved property worth over N17 billion from inferno between June and September, a state government official said on Wednesday in Ilorin.
The state’s Commissioner for Works, Abdulqowiyy Olododo, said this during an inter-ministerial press briefing.
“Property worth N817 million were however lost in fire incidents within the period in some parts of the state,” he said.
The Commissioner, who was represented by Mr Moshood Akanni, the ministry’s Director of Civil Engineering, also said many lives were saved by the fire service personnel during the period.
He however said only one life was lost in fire incidents during that period.
Olododo disclosed that fire-fighting equipment were purchased during the period under review for better services.
In her opening remarks, the state’s Commissioner for Communication, Bolanle Olukoju, said the inter-ministerial briefing was part of the engagement with citizens by the Gov. Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq-led administration.
Olukoju said her ministry, through the interface with the media, intended to keep the citizens informed about activities of the government on a regular basis.
She said the aim was to make people have a better understanding of government activities.
“The state government will continue to entrench a culture of transparency and accountability in governance,” Olukoju said, adding that the state’s debt profile has been going down.
The Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa-Buge, on her part disclosed that about 100 persons have been arraigned before designated courts for violating environmental laws.
She said the move became imperative to ensure a clean environment across parts of the state.
Musa-Buge added that the state government had involved security agencies in the war against environmental challenges in the state.
“The state government has provided about 50 boro bins in parts of the state, especially in the Ilorin metropolis.
“The move has changed the narrative of indiscriminate dumping of wastes in public places,” the Commissioner said.
She urged people still residing near river banks to move upland to avoid the harsh effects of the ongoing climatic change in the state, especially flooding.(NAN).
