Mr Ezekiel SonAllah, Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo Command, has reiterated the sector’s commitment to aggressively enforce speed limit device for motorists plying the road in the state.
SonAllah made this known on Monday in Akure at the command’s second quarter one-day workshop on capacity building for its Transport Standardisation Officers (TSO) across the unit of the FRSC.
The theme of the workshop is “The Imperative Of Safety Managers, Drivers Certification And Annual Vehicle Inspection”.
The event was aimed at accomplishment of 15 per cent reduction in road traffic crash fatality as one of the 2022 FRSC corporate strategic goals.
SonAllah, who explained that the essence of the retreat was to sensitise TSO to be able to carry out their job with passion and more commitment, said the command was interested in having zero crashes.
“I have directed all the unit commands to ensure that no vehicle passes Ondo State without speed limit device.
“We all know the advantage of this device because most of the crashes recorded are speed related.
“So, we are not relenting on our aggressive enforcement until every vehicle is having speed limit device on our road.
“Though, in Ondo State today, there is actually improvement in compliance in recent time because if we stop five vehicles, we are sure of getting three with the speed limit device,” he said.
SonAllah, who urged the TSOs to double their efforts in discharging their responsibilities, charged Safety Managers to go back and ensure that all their vehicles were installed with the device.
The sector commandant, therefore, called on all commercial vehicles to process passages manifest before embarking on any journey.
Mr Frank Adebayo, Managing Director of Olive Investment Nig. Ltd., an accredited speed limit device vendor, also appealed to the National Union of Road Transport Workers and others to comply with the directives to safe lives.
“In Nigerian, compliance in term of policy is not an easy task but with this enforcement I think it is compulsory for motorists to get the device that govern the speed of the vehicle.
“The level of crashes in Nigeria, especially in commercial vehicles, is very alarming. The rate at which members of groups or family lose their life in crashes is not a good story to tell.
“So, I am appealing to drivers’ unions to encourage their members to comply with the FRSC directive,” Adebayo said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was initiated by the sector Head of Transport Standardisation Officers, Superintendent Route Commander Busuyi Komolafe.
NAN also reports that about 30 officers and men from the sector command and component units participated in the event as well as many other stakeholders from fleet operators.
A goodwill message was delivered to the participants by the Corps Transport Standardization Officer, Corps Commander Abiodun Akinlade, who was represented by Deputy Corps Commander Lucie S Mhii, HOU, Inspection and Enforcement, CTSO, RSHQ, Abuja.(NAN)
