The Bayelsa council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), says it is monitoring the directive by its national leadership to workers to stay at home during the two-day warning strike.
Organised labour in Bayelsa had said that there should be neither protest nor rally during the two-day warning strike in the state and urged the workforce to stay at home and await further directives.
Mr John Angese, Secretary of Bayelsa chapter of the NLC, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the labour in Bayelsa had complied with the directive.
“The State Chairman of the NLC, Mr Barnabas Simon, led the monitoring team and he said compliance was commendable,” Angese said.
NAN reports that public offices, courts and public schools remained shut while some banks rendered skeletal services to customers.
However, private schools were open as academic activities were ongoing at some of the schools visited in Yenagoa.
An official of a commercial bank, who wished to remain anonymous, told NAN on telephone that although some banks remained shut, some members of staff remained available to assist customers in distress.
“Due to the nature of financial services, some people who for instance lost their cards or wish to report fraud or wish to block their accounts can still access customer services.
“So even though our gates are closed, security men were directed to screen and ensure that customers in distress can be assisted,” the official said.
Many private business operators opened for businesses as traffic remained light in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa capital. (NAN). READ ALSO:
