The Management of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) on Monday said that the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory at the University’s College of Health Sciences has been completed and ready for use.
A molecular diagnostic testing combines laboratory testing with the precision of molecular biology, which has revolutionised the way clinical and public health laboratory investigate the human, viral, and microbial genomes, their genes, and the products they encode.
Prof. Kolawole Wahab, the Director, University of Ilorin Centre for Research, Development, and In-house Training (CREDIT), announced the completion in Ilorin.
Wahab disclosed this when he led the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Monitoring Team for the project on a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sulyman Abdulkareem.
The laboratory project was executed by the University, in partnership with TETFund.
Wahab explained that the laboratory was proposed during the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that it was built from the scratch by the institution while TETFund provided the funding for equipping the research centre.
Also speaking, Mrs Abdulraheem Mariam, the leader of the TETFund Monitoring Team, said that the team was on campus to do a “monitoring inspection” of the molecular diagnostic facility.
She said that the education funding agency hoped to work further with the university to ensure that they got value for money.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulkareem, called for maximum cooperation between TETFund and the University.
Abdulkareem assured TETFund that the institution could do more if well supported adding that the school was built on integrity.
“If we are assisted, we can perform better.
“We want to satisfy our conscience and make sure that all is well with our country,” he said. (NAN)
