Prof. Tanko Ishaya, the Vice Chancellor of University of Jos, has promised that the university would host the best editions of the Nigerian University Games (NUGA) in 2024.
The Vice Chancellor said this while speaking to journalists at the Yakubu Gowon Airport Heipang on Sunday.
University of Jos won the hosting right for the 2024 NUGA at the just concluded 2022 edition of the game in Lagos.
Ishaya, who said that the university would be hosting the game for the first time, added it would put in its best to ensure a successful exercise in 2024.
The vice-chancellor said that hosting the games would place the university in the global limelight, adding that it would also afford it the opportunity to improve on its sporting and infrastructural facilities.
”It wasn’t easy winning the hosting right for NUGA 2024; it was keenly competed but we won.
”We know we don’t have all the funds and infrastructure on ground, but we will not rest, we will move and seek support from various stakeholders
”We contested for the hosting right because we are committed to ensuring that we provide all the sporting facilities that are required in order to host the university games successfully
”So, though we will be hosting this for the first time, but I want to assure you that it will be the best in history of Nigeria,” he said.
The vice-chancellor, who said preparations for the forthcoming games would commence immediately, added that the hosting right would afford the university the opportunity to tell the world that it has come of age.
On his part, Mr Victor Lapang, the Plateau Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, pledged that the state government would support the university to host a successful event.
Lapang explained that hosting NUGA in the univeristy of Jos would open new vistas of opportunities for the state as well, adding that it would tell the world that peace had returned to the state.
”I wish to congratulate the university for winning the hosting right and I want to assure you that goverment will give all the necessary support for the event to succeed,” he said. (NAN)
