Prof. Florence Obi, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, has pledged to partner with the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, in the area of Research and Development.
Obi made the pledge on Wednesday in Calabar during the 2021 Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences annual lecture with the topic: “Drug Delivery Systems and Smart Molecules; Possible Partnership opportunities with the University of Johannesburg, South Africa”.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Vice Chancellor was represented by the Dean of Allied Medical Sciences, Prof. Idongesit Akpabio.
The Vice Chancellor, whose pledge was informed by a request for partnership from a guest lecturer from the University of Johannesburg, Prof. Derek Ndinteh, said her administration was open to partnership on research in the medical field.
While describing research as key to the development of the institution, she expressed optimism that the partnership with the University of Johannesburg would also help to promote research and expand the frontiers of knowledge in the medical field.
The guest lecturer, Ndinteh, while delivering his lecture, appreciated the Medical College for the warm reception and pledged to partner with UNICAL on drug researches.
Ndinteh explained that there was lots of funding available for Research and Development in the field of medicine, thereby urging medical students and the institution to take advantage of the opportunities.
“We will partner with UNICAL to do drug researches because a responsive drug delivery system is important,” he said.
The Provost, College of Medical Sciences, Prof. Victor Ansa, expressed the hope that the lecture would help update the knowledge of academic staff and students of the faculty on drug related issues.
Ansa said the college was poised to strengthen and sustain the partnership with the guest lecturer and by extension, the University of Johannesburg for mutual benefits.
In his remarks, the Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Prof. Anozeng Igiri, said the lecture series was an annual event which provided a platform for the exchange of ideas as well as the propagation of latest trends in researches. (NAN)
