A 29-year-old unemployed man, Jacob Amos, who allegedly stole a car battery worth N 25,000, was on Wednesday brought before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State.
The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a charge of stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. Akpan Ikem, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec.7 at Agric area, Ajara in Badagry.
Ikem said that the battery belonged to the complainant, one Ayodeji Alamo.
“The complainant packed his car on the street and went to see a friend but he did not know that the accused was keeping surveillance about his movement.
“The accused thought nobody was watching him while he went to the car, opened its bonnet and removed the battery from the engine compartment.
“ But, he was caught by the security man at the premises where the car owner had gone visiting,’’ he said.
According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Chief Magistrate Jimoh Adefioye granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100, 000 and a surety in the like sum.
Adefioye said that the surety must provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions.
The case was adjourned until Jan. 25, 2018 for further hearing.
