Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed D. Abubakar, supported by United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, on Wednesday, unveiled an electronic anti-crime campaign jingle to air on national radio stations aimed at raising the awareness of Nigerians on how to tackle insecurity in the country.
The campaign will discourage young Nigerians from engaging in crime and seek public support and participation in tackling insecurity in Nigeria.
The anti-crime sensitisation campaign is part of the IGP’s innovative effort to address the security challenges of terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, cultism, rape as well as human and drug trafficking currently facing the nation. The campaign will also help in rebranding the nation and generally educate Nigerians on how to avoid falling victim of criminal activities.
The radio jingles, which come in both standard English and Pidgin English version, is targetted at Nigerians from all walks of life, particularly those in the rural areas who may not have quick access to other means of communication. The jingles are expected to run simultaneously in several radio stations across the nation.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony which took place at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, Group Managing Director, UBA Plc, Mr. Phillips Oduoza, expressed the bank’s delight in partnering with the Nigeria Police on the war against crime and criminality, noting that the anti-crime campaign would help reduce criminal activities in the country.
“This is a wonderful thing to do for Nigeria and we need to support the IGP and Nigeria Police in particular in what they are doing to reduce crime in the country. It is our belief in UBA that business would thrive when there is peace and security in the country. This initiative will help improve national security for every Nigerian,” he added.
Oduoza called on civil society organisations and the general public to partner with the Nigeria Police to fight crime stressing that creating a secured environment is the job of everyone, and should not be left to the Nigeria Police only.
While commending UBA for collaborating with the police to launch sensitization campaign in the media, the IGP also called on other private and corporate bodies to, as a matter of corporate social responsibility, partner with the Police to provide a safe and secured environment for economic and business activities to thrive.
