An airstrike conducted by the Nigerian Air Force on Saturday struck members of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guard (ZSCPG), local vigilantes, and residents of Tungar Kara in Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State.
The strike, intended to target bandits fleeing the community after a raid, mistakenly hit the wrong group, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 individuals.
Eyewitnesses reported that the unfortunate incident occurred shortly after the bandits escaped the area. Local vigilantes and residents, who had mobilized to defend their community, were among those caught in the attack.
Rescue operations are ongoing, and so far, 16 bodies have been recovered. Officials fear the death toll may rise as more victims are identified.
Residents have expressed outrage and grief over the incident, calling for an immediate investigation. One resident lamented, “We have lost our loved ones and our protectors. The government must take responsibility and provide support to the families affected.”
As of now, the military has not released an official statement regarding the incident, leaving the community demanding accountability and justice.
