Again, Sweden recorded a sweet 2-0 victory over New Zealand in the final Group G game to finish top of the log at the women’s football event of the on-going Tokyo 2020 Olympics ahead of the United States of America (USA) that laboured to goalless draw with Australia in their own match on Tuesday.
Sweden forward, Anna Anvegard scored the opening goal for her team in the 17th minute thanks, to an assist from Olivia Schough even as the goal was her first of the tournament.
Madelen Janogy scored the Scandinavian country’s second goal in the 30th minute from Hanna Bennison’s assist as the goal scored also opened her account for the tournament.
Elsewhere, United States of America Women’s National Team (USWNT) and Australia played out a goalless draw at Kashima Soccer Stadium.
Alex Morgan’s goal in the 32nd minute was ruled out for offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
At the end of the Group G matches, Sweden with nine points and USA four points, qualified for the quarter-final while Australia currently occupy the third position on the third-placed team ranking table and will have to wait for the outcomes from other Groups to determine its qualification.
