The Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) on Friday in Switzerland said that the draw ceremony for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Basketball tournaments would take place on Feb. 2.
FIBA said that the ceremony would include basketball tournaments for women and men, adding that it would hold at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies, Switzerland.
FIBA said in a statement that novel coronavirus pandemic would make the draw to hold behind closed doors and streamed across FIBA’s digital channels on YouTube and Facebook.
In the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament Draw Procedure, 12 teams have qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament, representing five continents.
They include Nigeria for Africa and Canada, Puerto Rico and U.S. for the Americas.
China, Japan (host) and Korea will represent Asia, while countries from Europe are Belgium, France, Serbia and Spain.
The Oceania is having Australia as its sole representative.
According to FIBA, each of the teams would be allocated to four pots based on the FIBA Women’s World Ranking, presented by Nike.
The draw will distribute the teams in three groups of four teams, and all teams would be drawn and placed into Group A, B or C.
There can be only a maximum of one group with two European teams and not more than one team from other continents in the same group.
In the Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament draw category, only eight teams have already qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament through the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, representing five continents.
They are Nigeria for Africa, Argentina and U.S. for the Americas.
Asia has Iran and Japan (host) while Europe has France and Spain, and Oceania, Australia.
The remaining four slots will be awarded to four teams to win FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments scheduled to hold from June 29 to July 4, in Victoria in Canada, Split in Croatia, Kaunas, in Lithuania and Belgrade in Serbia.
The winner of each of the four FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments will take part in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The 12 teams would be divided into four pots based on the FIBA Men’s World Ranking, presented by Nike.
The distribution of the four FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments’ future winners is based on the team with the highest ranking in each event.
The draw will distribute the teams in three groups of four teams each.
There can be a maximum of two European teams in the same group and no more than one team from other continents in the same group. All teams would be drawn and placed into either Group A, B or C. (NAN)
