Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday evening hosted his Benin Republic counterpart, President Patrice Talon, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Prompt News reports that the meeting between the duo discussed the development in Niger Republic, where political upheaval is reported earlier in the day.
As the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Tinubu has, already condemned the developments in Nigeria’s northern neighbours where soldiers were said to have barricaded President Mohamed Bazoum.
In a statement he personally signed earlier, Tinubu said, “I am in close consultation with other leaders in our region, and we shall protect our hard-earned democracy in line with the universally acceptable principle of constitutionalism.”
Apart from the situation in Niger, Nigeria is also in the process of fully re-opening its borders with Benin Republic.
Meanwhile, speaking to State House Correspondents after the closed doors meeting with Tinubu, Talon who spoke in French language translated later in English said:
“Thank you. I met with Nigerian President to discuss situation which requires fast actions, mediations. The situation in Niger Republic is unacceptable and requires actions…I believes in dialogue. Thank you “.
