Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has criticized the Nigerian government, alleging it harbors more corrupt individuals than the ‘yahoo boys‘ in wider society.
Speaking as the guest speaker at Nexford University’s 4th graduation ceremony in Lagos, Obi decried the misuse of public resources by officials, describing the country as a “crime scene” of systemic corruption.
“When we talk about vices, it’s not just Yahoo boys. There are actually more Yahoo people in government than outside. The entire country has been turned into a crime scene, with people inside and outside stealing,” he stated.
Emphasizing the need for strong leadership, Obi urged the graduates to become agents of change, advocating integrity and responsibility.
“It’s about leadership and igniting the future. It’s not rocket science, but it requires strong character and the ability to resist wrongdoing,” he said.
He encouraged the graduates to leverage their education to contribute to building a better society.
“You are victims of Nigeria because our generation and the one before us refused to do what is right, and now you’re bearing the consequences,” Obi added.
On the sidelines of the event, Obi highlighted the role of online education in addressing Nigeria’s educational challenges.
Drawing comparisons to successful models in India, Pakistan, and Turkey, he called for a hybrid approach that combines digital and physical learning.
“We need to invest in mass education because it is a critical tool for development. The more educated a society is, the more developed it becomes,” he concluded.
