The Okija community in Anambra State, on Friday, held an interdenominational burial service for the 22 victims of the tragic stampede that occurred during a rice distribution event on December 21, 2024.
The event, organized by the Obijackson Foundation, turned fatal when a crowd surged, leading to the unfortunate loss of lives.
During the service, Rt. Rev. Ralph Okafor, the retired Bishop of Ihiala Diocese, consoled the grieving families, urging them to remain hopeful and avoid mourning like those without faith.
He emphasized that while such tragedies are painful, they serve as a reminder of life’s transient nature and the need to trust in God’s plan.
“The entire world mourns with Okija today,” Bishop Okafor said. “Let us not dwell on blame but rather seek the lessons God wants us to learn from this incident. Heaven remains our ultimate goal, a place where suffering and tears will cease.”
The Bishop also encouraged Chief Ernest Obiejesi, popularly known as Obijackson, and other philanthropists not to be discouraged from supporting the less privileged despite the tragic incident.
He called on them to continue their acts of kindness, as such generosity uplifts communities.
Chief Obiejesi, visibly emotional during the ceremony, reassured the community of his commitment to their welfare. He pledged to take measures to ensure such an incident never recurs.
“This tragedy reminds us of the fragility of life and the importance of prioritizing safety in all we do,” he stated.
“We will continue to support Okija and honor the memories of those lost by making the community stronger and safer.” He also promised that the Obijackson Foundation would remain steadfast in its mission to serve the people of Okija and provide for the families affected by the tragedy.
The Chairman of Dozzy Group of Companies, Chief Daniel Chukwudozie, who also hails from Okija, expressed his condolences and pledged ₦10 million to support the bereaved families.
He described the incident as a collective loss for the community and urged the families to find strength in their shared grief.
Igwe Emeka Okezie, the traditional ruler of Okija, also spoke at the service, expressing gratitude to Chief Obiejesi for his continued generosity despite the tragedy.
He acknowledged the importance of the annual rice distribution program to the community and urged the philanthropist to expand it further.
“Osuofia Okija’s commitment has brought hope to many families every December,” the monarch said. “I am grateful he has reassured us of his dedication. His support is vital, and I urge him to even consider doubling his efforts.”
The ceremony was marked by heartfelt prayers, tributes, and an outpouring of solidarity, as the Okija community mourned its loss while resolving to forge ahead in unity
