For disobeying the order of the court, the Speaker of House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has asked a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to jail the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba.
Ruling on the ex parte application, Justice Ahmed Ramat Muhammed ordered Tambuwal’s counsel to serve the motion on notice to the IGP’s lawyers for them to respond.
The Judge also adjourned sitting to December 1 for a ruling on whether other interested parties, notably the chairman of Tambuwal Local Government Area and a member representing Tambuwal West constituency in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, could be joined in the suit.
Sequel to the suit filed by Mr. Tambuwal on the withdrawal of his police aides, Justice Muhammed had, on November 7, issued an order directing all parties in the suit to maintain status quo pending the determination of the suit.
Counsel to the Speaker, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), had on Friday filed an ex parte application before the court, praying that the IGP be charged for contempt.
Fagbemi contended that the IGP directed his men to lock the speaker out of the National Assembly as well as fired tear gas at lawmakers.
Also, he had argued that the IGP by refusing to recognize Tambuwal as Speaker made himself the complainant, the judge and the executioner in a matter where a restraining order had already been issued by the Judge.
