Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal on Sunday was a guest of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.
In company of three members of the House- Sumaila Kawu, Ajobola Muraina and Aminu Shagari, the Speaker met behind closed-door with Obasanjo for about one hour, forty-five minutes.
Fielding questions from newsmen after the meeting, Tambuwal dismissed insinuations that he had planned to dump the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He reaffirmed his membership of the PDP, saying he was in Abeokuta to confer with the former President whom he described as “our national leader” on national issues.
Tambuwal spoke further, “I have come to visit our PDP national leader. Baba Obasanjo and I are still in PDP.
“Baba Obasanjo is a leader, not only in Nigeria, but in Africa, and it is only appropriate for us in positions of authority and leadership to occasionally come and consult him on matters of national interest and that is why I am here.
“There are lots of issues in Nigeria today. Of course, there is the issue of Petrol Industry Bill that we are considering in the House, while the Constitution amendment is also ongoing.
“There are many other key and important legislations that are also before the parliament. So, we need to consult our leaders on such important and vital issues, to get inputs from them before we conclude deliberations.”
The Speaker has been absent at key functions of the PDP of late. He was absent when President Goodluck Jonathan and other party leaders held a rally in his home state, Sokoto to welcome Bafarawa back to the party.
He was also absent at the PDP rally in Owerri, Imo state on Saturday, organized to welcome party leaders from the state who have just defected from the APC.
His decision not to attend major functions organized by his party, PDP and romance with the opposition APC, is fuelling speculations that he may be considering defection to the APC.
