Security agencies have arrested individuals suspected of stealing sewage manhole covers along major highways in Abuja.
According to a statement by the Senior Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend their collaborators, particularly those purchasing the stolen items, as the government intensifies measures to address the issue.
The action comes after a directive from the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, who tasked relevant agencies with taking firm steps against the perpetrators.
Describing the vandalism as a serious threat to public safety and a misuse of national resources, the Minister expressed his determination to eradicate the menace. He condemned those who remove and sell these essential infrastructure components for personal profit, despite the risks posed to road users.
Wike also praised a citizen whose viral video brought the crime to light, calling it an exemplary act of patriotism. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report similar acts of sabotage to help safeguard public assets.
The FCT administration reiterated its commitment to bringing all offenders and their accomplices to justice, assuring the public that no effort will be spared in addressing the problem.
