Respite has come the way of Super Falcons as the seven-match losing streak of the Nigeria’s senior women’s team was halted early Wednesday with the 1-0 win over Costa Rica in Leon, Mexico, courtesy of
Ijeoma Esther Okoronkwo’s 45′ strike.
The Saint-Étienne forward’s goal ensured that Nigerian ended the.four-nation invitational tournament tagged Women’s Revelation Cup in Mexico with at least a win in their last match.
The Randy Waldrum led Super Falcons had lost two earlier matches in the tournament to the host country, Mexico and Colombia by a lone goal each to complete a seven-month losing streak.
However, Okoronkwo’s 45′ goal assisted by
Onyinyechi.Jennifer Echegini was all the Super Falcons needed to snap the free-fall and restore some sanity in the squad after the disastrous outing in the last Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The all-action Echegini had wriggled her way to the baseline before sending a cross to the back post, where Okoronkwo lurked and on receiving the pass, she steadied herself with a composed first touch before curling the ball past the Costa Rican goalkeeper into the far post.
Thus the dethroned African champions secured their first win since July 2022 after seven consecutive defeats in all Grade A matches.
Prompt News can confirm that Waldrum who joined the team in Mexico will also return to his primary job as the Head Coach of Pittsburgh University, Pennsylvania women’s football team to wait for the next assignment which will be on the next FIFA Women’s Football window in April and June before the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final in Australia and New Zealand slated from July 10 to August 20.
