Retired senior Police Officers officers have advised Nigerians to stop distracting policemen by pedling rumours againt them.
The top former police chiefs have urged the officers and men of the force to be more focused as they have serious security challenges to tackle.
They also called on Nigerians as well as policemen and women to jettison a story in an onliine media which indicted the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, PSC, Sir Mike Okiro and top Police Chief , Mr Abdulkarim Dauda, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) attached to the presidency over alleged promotion negotiation for the Force Police Public Relations Officer (FPPRO), Mr Moshood Jimoh.
A Deputy Inspector – General of Police, DIG, who craved anonymity said even as Jimoh was not directly indicted by the said publication, the image of the Force was being hunted and damaged by the media organisation saying : “The media outfit did a shoddy job; can the media prove its case against Okiro and Dauda?”he asked.
The DIG said Okiro’s character was being tarnished by certain elements in the society because of his fear of God and his simplicity of lifestyle : ” If a DCP has spoken or made a case for his subordinate to a superior officer, is that an offence or crime? I think, if you read the body of the story, you will find out that Okiro was their target”.
The DIG concluded that the publication has spurred the police management team to look into the case of the FPPRO.
Also contributing , a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Donald Iroham dismissed such allegations saying that the reporter may not be able to implicate Moshood that he was lobbying for pronation.
He said: “Promotion is for the PSC to decide. It is an internal thing between the PSC and the Police. If Jimoh is qualified to be promoted and he is without any criminal records, why can’t he be promoted?. The PSC should disregard detractors and do the needful if it deems it fit to promote him to the next rank to suit the office he is occupying.
” I don’t know why people should distract the police who are having many security challenges to contend with. The PSC and the Police should disregard certain comments and move forward .Jimoh as far as I am concerned was not indicted for lobbying ,so nothing stops the PSC from promoting him”.
He advised Jimoh not to be distracted as the office of FPRO was not a tea-party:” He should be focused and be diligent in his duties and make the force proud. There is nothing wrong if a superior officer saw something good in you and you are really qualified and made case for you”.
