The South East Youth Stakeholders Forum, a coalition of youth organizations from across Nigeria’s South East, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to grant the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from detention.
Following an emergency meeting on Saturday to discuss issues impacting the region, the forum called for presidential intervention in Kanu’s prolonged incarceration.
In a statement, the group appealed directly to President Tinubu, describing him as a “father of the nation” and a “detribalized Nigerian.”
They urged him to instruct the Attorney General of the Federation to discontinue the prosecution of Kanu and facilitate his release.
The forum believes that Kanu’s release is a crucial step in addressing the ongoing security challenges in the South East.
The group expressed hope that this action would help end the region’s instability, promote genuine reconciliation, and ease tensions within the area.
Representatives from the five South East states, led by Mazi Ezenwa Onyirimba of Enugu State, emphasized that freeing Kanu would create an atmosphere conducive to dialogue, particularly with youth from the region who have taken up arms against the state.
