Six people on Friday appeared before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly defrauding three job seekers of N950,000.
The defendants are Augustine Tuhamese, 29; Djane Flourent, 35; Kodjou Arnord, 28; Levina Kodjou, 20; Alimot Adesanya, 40, and a 22-year-old female simply identified as Falila.
They are facing a two-count charge of fraud and stealing to which they pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, ASP Clément Okuoimose, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Jan.10, at 3.30 p.m. at Ajara Agric Gate, Badagry.
Okuoimose said that the defendants fraudulently obtained the sum from the complainants – Boing Patrick, Annon Tomkara and Wisam Argu – in the guise of helping them to secure jobs.
He said that the defendants converted the money to their personal use
Okuoimose said that all efforts made by the complainants to get back their money proved abortive.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 287 stipulates three years’ jail term for stealing, while Section 314 provides for 15 years’ imprisonment for fraud.
Chief Magistrate Fadahunsi Adefioye granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 each with two sureties in like sum.
Adefioye adjourned the case until May 17 for mention. (NAN)
