By Gracious Akujobi The Super Falcons Tuesday lost 1-3 to Sia One Boys Academy in a tune up match played at Goal Project pitch of the Abuja National stadium, preparatory to next month’s African Women Championship qualifier.
Sia One Boys were two goals up at interval with goals from Mohammed Usman in the 25th minute and Ejiro Iwelemo in the 40th minute. The boys of former Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia made it three on resumption of the second half through Sola Idehen in the 47th minute.
The Super Falcons scored their consolation goal in the 78th minute when new kid on the block Imoh Anam broke loose and fired a right foot shot to the roof of the net.
Thereafter, Falcons drew applause from the scanty crowd that watched the early morning game as they matched the Sia One boys pace for pace and tactically. The Sia One boys were asking all the question but the Falcons held them off till the final whistle.
In a post match chat Coach Edwin Okon drew positive from the game, commending the girls for holding their own against the physically stronger boys, noting “I am proud of these girls even in defeat”.
He continued “the match was very important for us as it enabled us to test how the girls would cope physically, pace and tactical against their follow women.
“If they can play like this against a male team, I doubt if any women team can withstand them. I am impressed with their performance. It is very encouraging and I think we can only get better” he stated.
Super Falcons are expected to play another test match against a yet to be known male side before next week’s international friendly with Cameroon’s Indomitable Lioness in Abuja.
