By Olusegun Lawrence Nigeria’s Senate Thursday called on President Muhammadu Buhari, who doubles as the Minister of Petroleum Resources to end fuel scarcity in two weeks.
Members of the Senate Committee on Downstream lamented the scarcity of fuel that has lingered for weeks now without end in sight.
Consequently, the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and other relevant government agencies have been directed to ensure availability of fuel across the country in two weeks.
Senator Uche Ekwunife, chairman of the Committee on Downstream, gave the directive during an interface with officials of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and other relevant agencies.
“We are giving you target of two weeks, the price discrepancy must stop and also mandating Minister of Petroleum, head of agencies to stop the scarcity within two weeks,” Senator Ekwunife said.
On the disclosure by the Petroleum Pricing Monitoring Companies (PPMC) that the country has lost N50 billion to pipeline vandals within 10 months, the committee demanded for details of subsidy claims of N413 billion and names of the marketers involved.
Speaking, the Managing Director of PPMC, Esther Nnamdi-Ogbuche attributed the problem of fuel scarcity to economic sabotage.
