ABUJA – By Olusegun Lawrence Nigeria’s Senate on Wednesday succumbed to public pressure by dropping the controversial amendment of the Code of Conduct/ Bureau Act and Administration of Criminal Justice Act for further legislative business.
The decision to drop the amendment which had passed through second reading was taken during a closed door session which lasted for close to three hours.
The federal lawmakers have been widely criticised for choosing to amend the Act at a time when the Senate President is facing corruption trial.
Presiding over the plenary, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, also called off Summon issued to Code of Conduct Tribunal chairman, Justice Danladi Umar.
The Senators however resolved to stand by their leader, Bukola Saraki, who is standing trial at Code of Conduct Tribunal.
Also, a committee was set up to resolve the remaining issues dividing the Senate.
Mr. Saraki, is facing a 13-count charge bordering on corruption and false declaration of assets when he was the Governor of Kwara state.
