The Principal of Madonna Model Schools in Abuja, Rev Sister Gracemaris Ngozi Chukwuka has emphasized the importance of inculcating cultural values in the upbringing of children especially at their tender ages.
Rev Sr Chukwuka who gave the admonition during the School’s Cultural Day Celebration on Friday, particularly enjoined parents to be proud of their home background and culture by speaking to their children in their local dialect.
“How many of our our parents speak to their children in their dialect. In as much as we do not condemn the speaking of English and a conscious effort to pronounce the words as they ought to be (phonics), we insist that a Yoruba/Igbo/Hausa/Tiv, etc should also speak his or language fluently”, she said.
The principal noted that from interactions with some of the students and pupils, she discovered that a good number of them do not know their home towns and states of origin which they blamed on their parents.
She therefore disclosed that based on this, “the school as an agent of socialization, formation and education thought it wise to organize this cultural day celebration to enlighten the pupils/students about their various origins and cultures and also to remind parents of their duties. READ ALSO:

“The school has done the theoretical aspect of it, in which we gave the pupils assignment to find out the name of their state, village, town, L.G.A., etc, today we are here for the practical aspect”, the principal added.
The event commenced with a Holy Mass celebrated by Rev Father Dennis Alih of Missionaries of St Paul (MSP).
High points of the occasion were Inspection of Cultural Food Exhibitions, dance and drama competitions and counting in different languages by all the zones.
