Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, has charged the Nigerian Navy to intensify efforts against waterways threats, protecting maritime resources and ensuring safety and security in maritime activities.
Sanwo-Olu gave the charge at the opening of the 5th International Maritime Conference on Thursday in Lagos.
The ceremony was in commemoration of the 68th anniversary of the Nigeria Navy.
The conference had the theme: “Promoting The Blue Economy in Africa Through International Cooperation on Maritime Security.”
The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, advocated for a holistic approach that encompassed economic growth, environmental stewardship and security in tackling issues of terrorism and insurgency.
He acknowledged the significant strides of the Nigerian Navy in safeguarding the nation’s waters, protecting maritime resources and ensuring the safety and security of maritime activities.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the Nigerian Navy’s dedication and bravery had been pivotal in combating piracy, smuggling and other maritime threats, thereby, contributing to the peace and stability of the region.
“By working together with the military, the full potential of the maritime sector can be harnessed, thereby driving innovation and ensuring prosperity for future generations.
“Lagos as a bustling port city thrives on the efficiency and safety of its maritime activities.
“Also, our ports are the lifeline of not just Lagos, but the entire country, facilitating trade and contributing significantly to our Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“Therefore, it is imperative that we support initiatives aimed at enhancing maritime security and fostering international partnerships toward harnessing the huge, but largely untapped potential,” he stated.
Sanwo-Olu extended his appreciation to all the naval officers for their dedication to advancing maritime excellence.
He added that their efforts and sacrifices would not be forgotten. (NAN)
