Chief coach of 2018 AITEO Cup Women’s Champions, Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt, Regina Akaraonye has yet again become the first Nigerian woman to win the Football Association (FA) Cup a record 8 times as a player and coach.
Akaraonye popularly called Kekere (Small girl) in her playing days at Larry Angels now Rivers Angels won the FA Cup officially six times as Captain of the Rivers State club and now led the team to defeat Ibom Angels by penalty last year to win the AITEO Cup for the first time.
She repeated the feat in Yenagoa yesterday to become the first Nigerian woman to win the Cup a record 8 times.
She told Prompt News Online exclusively after her team beat hard-fighting Ibom Angels in Yenagoa to lift the AITEO Cup for the second time in her reign as the Chief Coach under the Technical Adviser, Edwin Okon, that she is cherishing the feat she has achieved in her football career dating back to early 1990s.
According to the soft- spoken graduate of Nigeria Institute of Sports (NIS), Lagos and CAF Grade B holder attributed her achievement so far to hardwork, dedication and God’s grace.
” If I look back I cannot but be grateful to God Almighty for His mercies and favours. He makes all things possible. I will continue to work hard in every assignment I am given and believing that one day, my efforts will be rewarded.
“For my club to win the AITEO Cup against all odds in Yenagoa means a lot to me, players and the entire management”, Akaraonye stated.
