The Sokoto state government has distributed 108,000 bags of rice and millet to 180 centres as Ramadan feeding, packaged for the less privileged.
Alhaji Mustapha Shehu, the Public Sub-Committee Chairman of the State Ramadan feeding committee made this disclosure to newsmen on Friday.
Shehu, who is the Chairman Sokoto North Local Government Area, said that 36,000 bags were distributed in the established 180 centres in three tranches.
He said 200 bags of rice and millet compromising 100 bags each, were distributed to 100 persons in each of the three cycles.
He explained that the state government established three collection centres to ease the process, adding that a five- member distribution committee was inaugurated in addition to the high-level supervisory committee.
According to him, besides distributing raw food items for people to cook by themselves in their respective houses, the state government also distributed cooked foods to people in the evening in the fasting period.
He said cooked food were being taken round for distribution by vehicles to public places, schools, hospitals and similar public places.
Shehu, who is also the State Chairman of Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), said that another consignment comprising bags of maize and millet were distributed to the people through their religious and traditional heads, in 86 districts across the state
He said that the distinct gesture was designed by the administration of Gov. Aminu Tambuwal and had been implemented for years.
He added that the Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission, Sokoto State Ministry of Social Welfare, also conducted similar gestures, including to people living with disability in the state.
All the efforts were to assist the less- privileged, ease their feeding and cushion their hardships during the Ramadan fasting, he added. (NAN)
