The Kano State Government has given orders for the immediate evacuation of refuse piled up around the metropolis.
The Kano State Commissioner for Local Government, Alhaji Murtala Garo and the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Kabiru Getso, gave the order at an emergency meeting held on Thursday.
Garo, who led the emergency meeting, said that the government was unhappy over indiscriminate disposal of waste around the town and had to summon the meeting.
He said that consequently, the Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje ordered for the evacuation of all refuse dumped on the major roads in the metropolis with immediate effect.
Garo commended the efforts of all stakeholders for their cooperation in ensuring environmental hygiene, especially construction companies and self help groups.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Environment, Getso said that Ganduje had instructed the ministry to conduct the “Keep Kano Clean Week 2022” exercise as soon as possible.
“The order was given due to the large volumes of garbage obtained since the beginning of Ramadan fasting, which is visible in many parts of the city.
“It has been a tradition since the inception of this administration to conduct the annual Keep Kano Clean exercise ahead of every rainy season.”
The commissioner ,however, appealed to residents to dump their waste at the appropriate dump sites for easy evacuation.
He decried the careless attitude of people who dump refuse everywhere especially in the water ways and other inaccessible areas.
Getso solicited the support of all relevant stakeholders including Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Tipper Drivers Association and private companies to ensure the prompt evacutaion of the refuse and continous cleanliness in the state. (NAN)
