Nigeria’s Super Eagles defeated the Lone Star of Liberia 2-0 at the Grand Stade de Tangier on Saturday evening to move a step closer to securing a place in the play-off round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, PNO SPORTS reports
Kelechi Iheanacho was hacked down in the 13th minute by Liberia goalkeeper, Boison Wynney De Souza and the referee awarded a penalty kick to the Super Eagles.
Victor Osimhen duly converted the spot kick to give the Super Eagles a well deserved lead.
The Super Eagles struggled to assert their authority on the game afterwards with the hosts coming close to equalising a couple of times.
Osimhen was fouled inside the box late in the game and captain Ahmed Musa, who replaced Kelechi Iheanacho few minutes earlier put the ball into the net.
Nigeria will have to wait till the final group game against Cape Verde at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos on Tuesday to determine the team that will proceed to the play-off round of the qualifiers after Cape Verde’s 2-1 win over the Central Africa Republic.
Nigeria occupy the first position in Group C with 12 points from five games ahead of Cape Verde (10 points), Central Africa Republic (4 points), and Liberia (3 points).
