The death has been announced of Professor Samuel Afolabi Olowe, former Chief Medical Director of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
He died on Tuesday January 14th 2025, aged 88.
Professor Olowe was an internationally renowned pediatrician and distinguished professor of medicine with specialization in Neotology.
He worked for several years at the college of medicine of the University of Lagos.
In recognition of his hardwork and commitment to an effective healthcare system, he was appointed as the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), serving as CMD between 1991 and 1995.
Professor Olowe began his medical training at the University College Ibadan in 1958, graduating in 1963.
He also trained at the McGill University, Montreal Canada. Amongst others, he holds a Diploma of the American Board of Pediatrics, and is a Fellow of the West African College of Pediatrics, West African College of Physicians and F.A.A.P.
Professor Olowe commenced his working life as a medical practitioner in the field of pediatrics in 1963 at the Wesley Guild Hospital Ilesa.
He worked at Adeoyo Hospital, Ibadan between June and November 1964.
He was also a medical officer in the old Western Regional Ministry of Health from December 1964-June 1967.
He was Registrar in Paediatrics at LUTH between July 1967 and June 1968.
He served and had a distinguished career as senior consultant, senior lecturer and subsequently Professor in Pediatrics at the College of Medicine.
This spanned the period 1971-1987. The contribution of Professor Olowe to the world of Pediatrics was not limited to Nigeria.
He made his mark and distinguished himself abroad, very early in his career, as Senior Assistant Resident in Pediatrics at the Montreal Children’s Hospital Quebec Canada, between 1970-1971.
In later years he worked as Senior Pediatrics Consultant at the Ballasmar General Hospital,Saudi Arabia.
After retirement, he was involved in Humanitarian services with the Red Cross.
He was a committed Christian serving at the Chapel of the Healing Cross, Idi- Araba where he initiated the Total Wholeness Clinic, dedicated to providing healthcare to the less privileged.
He is survived by his wife Mrs Deborah Olowe, Children and Grand Children. Dates of final rites to be announced by the family.
