Anthony Gordon’s controversial goal in the 64th minute, which was subject to a four-minute VAR check, proved the difference in a keenly contested encounter.
Arsenal missed the chance to move level on points with holders Manchester City.
Newcastle United climbed up to sixth position on the table following the win.

Newcastle United will travel to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.
Arsenal will host Sevilla at the Emirates Stadium the following day.
