Arsenal unbeaten start to the season came to an end with a 1-0 defeat at St James’ Park on Saturday night.
Anthony Gordon’s controversial goal in the 64th minute, which was subject to a four-minute VAR check, proved the difference in a keenly contested encounter.
Arsenal missed the chance to move level on points with holders Manchester City.
Newcastle United climbed up to sixth position on the table following the win.
