The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has reported that one of its officers is missing after an attack by suspected pirates on the state’s coastal waters on Tuesday, January 14.
Timfon John, the police spokesperson, stated that two other officers were injured during the ambush on the Marine Police Patrol Team (MPPT), which occurred when 24 armed pirates launched an assault.
The pirates, who were dressed in military camouflage and operated three speedboats, engaged in a violent gun battle with the officers.
Despite the police officers’ resistance, two officers, Inspector Sunday Usuyak and Inspector Edet Enenyi, were injured and are receiving medical treatment. However, Inspector Udi Emenyi remains unaccounted for.
In response to the attack, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, has deployed a tactical team to work with other security agencies, including the Nigerian Navy, to track down the pirates and locate the missing officer.
John emphasized that the police are determined to apprehend those responsible for the attack and to bolster security on the state’s waterways.
She also called for public assistance in providing any relevant information to help prevent further criminal activities.
