The police, on Monday, arraigned a 38-year-old man, Samuel Umeojili, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting his wife.
The defendant, of No. 2, Idolofin Street, Ado-Ekiti, is standing trial on a two-count charge of assault and breach of peace.
The Prosecutor, Insp Olasunkanmi Bamikole, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Feb. 15 at about 09:00 a.m. at No. 2, Idolofin Street, Ado-Ekiti.
He said that the defendant assaulted his wife, one Okechukwu Umeojili, by beating her to coma.
Bamikole also said that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by turning his wife into a punching bag.
According to him, the offences contravene Sections 185 and 181 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The prosecutor asked the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the file and assemble his witnesses.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him, while there was no counsel to defend him.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Saka Afunso, who ruled that the offence was bailable under the law, consequently admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N25,000, with one surety in like sum.
He adjourned the case till Feb. 29 for hearing. (NAN)
