The management of Plateau State University, Bokkos and the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have constituted a seven-man committee to resolve the ongoing strike by the union.
Mr John Agam, Public Relations Officer of the institution made this known in a statement in Jos on Monday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the university’s chapter of the union had on Dec. 21, 2021, embarked on an indefinite strike to press home its demands
Agam said that the committee was constituted at an expanded meeting between the management and leadership of ASUU in the institution.
He explained that the committee would look into the demands of the union, particularly the issue of earned allowance, amongst others.
He said that the committee comprised members of the union in the institution, its Bauchi zone and the management of the university.
“An expanded meeting of the management of the university and the leadership of ASUU in the institution held today.
“A seven-man committee was constituted to find ways of amicably resolving issues that brought about ongoing strike by the union.
“Participants at the meeting expressed concern over the ongoing strike and appealed to the union to reconsider its position in the interest of the students, parents and the state,” Agam said.
He noted that Prof. Yohanna Izam, the Vice Chancellor of the university, who chaired the meeting, said that the governor of the state was committed toward addressing the demands of the striking academic staff.
Izam said that government had released funds for the part payment of the arrears of earned allowances of the academic staff.
“As soon as the committee verifies the claims as demanded by ASUU, payments will commence.
“With the arrangements already made, the university has the capacity to liquidate the arrears before the end of the year,” he said.
He noted that the vice chancellor explained that the university had put modalities in place to address other issues which formed part of the union’s demands.
Agam said that the committee had four days to submit its report. (NAN)
