By Olusegun Lawrence The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its national convention billed to hold today (Wednesday) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party took the decision following a court order that the convention should not hold.
Rising from a meeting, NEC, which comprises of Board of Trustees (BoT), the Caretaker Committee under the Chairmanship of Senator Ahmed Makarfi, PDP Governors and National Assembly members, agreed to shift the convention by 90 days.
Earlier in the morning, security operatives including soldiers had been deployed to the convention venue, Sharks stadium to prevent the convention from holding.
Also, Armoured Personnel Carriers were stationed at the venue of the convention.
Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja on Tuesday ordered that the convention should not hold.
Consequently, Justice Abang directed the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to enforce the order.
The Judge also ordered the independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, not to monitor the PDP convention.
Prompt News Online recalls that the party leadership was in dilemma on Tuesday on whether it should hold the convention or not following conflicting court orders.
The Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, had given the party the nod to go ahead with the convention in a suit filed by Senator Ben Obi.
However, Justice Abang’s ruling in the suit filed Senator Ali Modu Sheriff in Abuja ordered that the convention should not hold.
