Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state on Tuesday presented scholarship awards to some indigent students of the state.
The beneficiaries are mostly final year students of universities, polytechnics and post-graduate students from tertiary institutions in Nigeria and abroad.
Interestingly, the scholarships which are for 20111/2012 are coming 28 years after they were last awarded by the state government.
While presenting the cheque, the governor said it was a memorable occasion bearing in mind when last such was held.
His words, “without mincing words, no nation can hope to make any meaningful progress without sound and qualitative education. Martin Luther King posited that if you want to keep a man in perpetual slavery, do not give him education.
“It is with this premise in mind that the state government, under the present administration, has always made the education of our children a high priority.
“We have touched every local government area with meaningful and pupil-oriented projects.”
The presentation was held at the House of Chiefs and witnessed by top government functionaries of the state.
