Oyo Government on Friday launched a comprehensive training programme for farmers in rural communities as part of its continued efforts to enhance food security.
In his remarks during the launch, held at Aawe Town, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Olasunkanmi Olaleye, said the programme was aimed at reducing unemployment and to improve on food production.
Olaleye, who described the programme as first of its kind in the state’s history, disclosed that 62 farmers selected from various rural communities were participating in the training to enhance their agricultural skills and knowledge.
According to the commissioner, each participant has been allocated two acres of land to cultivate, with over 200 acres of maize farm already cultivated within the Oyo Youth Incubation Park Centre, Aawe.
He said that the initiative was expected to ensure food sufficiency in the coming months.
Olaleye further stated that the training programme would be taken to various communities and villages in the state.
He explained that government embarked on the initiative so as to promote good agricultural practices to boost food production and food security in the state.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Rev. David Idowu, expressed gratitude to the state government and International Institute for Tropucal Agriculture (IITA), for continued efforts to develop agricultural sector in the state.
Idowu promised that the farmers would maximise opportunity of the training to contribute toward the development of the agricultural sector in state.
He added that the training would have a positive impact on the lives of the participants and the overall agricultural sector in the state.(NAN).
