The Oyo State House of Assembly on Thursday appealed to the state government to install Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking devices on patrol vehicles donated to various security agencies.
The lawmakers, while deliberating on a motion, said this would help in monitoring the locations and movements of all patrol vehicles any time of the day.
“This will help to enhance service delivery and safety of officers as well as ensure quick responses,” they submitted.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the motion also asked for more patrol vehicles to be deployed at nights because that was when most crimes were usually committed.
“This will make it difficult for criminals to have their way,” the lawmakers contended.
The motion had read in part, “While security agencies have been making commendable efforts in curbing crimes and maintaining law and order, there is still room for improvement.
“The rate at which crime occurs in Oyo state remains disturbing particularly at night. Stealing, kidnapping, armed robberies and gang violence happen in spite of security surveillance.
“The state government needs to introduce advanced technology, like the GPS.”
Mr Dawood Olalere (Ibadan North West State Constituency/PDP), while speaking on one of the resolutions urged the executive arm of government to increase public awareness about the toll free line.
He said this would be through the State Ministry of Information and Orientation and the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS).
Olalere said this would be available 24 hours daily for residents to report emergencies. “Everyone needs to be aware of this,” he said.
The motion further urged security agencies to be more proactive in combating crimes by fully utilising tools and equipment at their disposal.
“The security agencies should imbibe good maintenance culture to ensure the durability of all operational vehicles provided for them by the state government,” it added.
NAN reports that the motion was co-sponsored by Olalere and leader of the House, Mr Sanjo Adedoyin.(NAN).
