By Gracious Akujobi There is outrage among sports enthusiasts in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as the Federal Government moved the Centenary musical concert to the Abuja National Stadium.
As at the time of filling this report, a massive musical stage is being constructed right on the pitch as shown by the photograph above.
The musical concert which is part of the series of activities lined up to mark 100 years of the amalgamation of the Southern and Northern Protectorates will last for a month.
Sports enthusiasts are however of the opinion that, such event should not be held right on the pitch when there is space within the stadium complex to mount the stage.
They opine that with the large movement of people on the pitch, there is no way tax payers money would still not be spent to re-grass the pitch after the concert.
Prompt News recalls that the last time the pitch was re-grassed, the National Sports Commission (NSC) spent about N96.6 million.
“I cannot understand why government should hold a month musical concert right on the main pitch of a national stadium. We have two training pitches; can’t they hold the concert on any of the two?
“We also have enough space within the stadium complex, why must it be on the main pitch? I don’t understand the way we do things in this country,” a sports enthusiast lamented.
