WARRI – By Okiemute Okpomor Ubeji and other neighbouring communities of Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State on Thursday, July 6, 2017 benefitted from a free medical outreach. provided by the Sector 1, Operation Delta Safe (OPDS)/3 Battalion, Effurun as part the activities to commemorate the “2017 Nigerian Army Day Celebration”.
The theme of the event was, ” Sustaining the Success of the Nigerian Army in Tackling Contemporary and Emerging Security Challenges”.
Flagging off the event at Ubeji Town hall, Col. Alhassan Grema, Commander Sector 1, Operation Delta Safe told the crowd of well over 1500 that the exercise was a way of giving back to the communities where they operate, he called on the people to see the military as their friends.
Col. Grema assured the people that exercise would further strengthened their relationship, noting that in the military, there is what “we called civil military cooperation”.
According to the Sector Commander, “this is a day the Nigerian Army has reserved to celebrate itself, we either showcase our capability or we give back to the society we operate. We have decided to give back by way of providing free medical services to Ubeji and neighboring communities”.
Col. Grema who identified crude oil theft, kidnapping, illegal oil bunkering, and other associated crimes like armed robbery and cultism as major challenges in his Area of Responsibility said the military was curtailing the menace.
In his remarks, Hon. More Edema, Chairman, Warri South Local Government who was represented the Hon. Nana Alex, Secretary to the Local Government(SLG) express his appreciation to the army for the humanitarian gesture.
According to Hon. Edema, “this is first of its kind in Warri South, we are pleased with the Army, even though they are military, they still deemed it fit to assist the people they operate in their localities medically.”
Some of the free medical services provided included eye check and provision of eye glasses, Blood sugar level test, Malaria, Dental, Blood Pressure, administration of free drugs among others.
